Sandra ‘Sandy’ Bruening, 72

CRESCO - Sandra “Sandy” Sue Bruening, age 72, of Cresco, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, Iowa after a short battle with cancer. 

A private service will be held. Public visitation will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 29, 2021 at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Burial will take place at the New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco. 

Sandy was born on April 20, 1948 in Cresco to Sam and Sarah (Kerst) Lucas. She was baptized on Dec. 3, 1950 and confirmed on Dec. 30, 1962 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. She attended Cresco schools and graduated from Crestwood High School in 1966. She married Gary Bruening on April 27, 1968 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cresco. 

Sandy worked at Northern Engraving in Spring Grove, Minn. right after high school. She then worked at Deco Products for a short time. She also spent a couple years babysitting and worked for several years at Dollar General, until she retired. 

Sandy enjoyed bowling, fishing, camping, going to the casinos, playing cards and spending time with her family. 

She is survived by her two sisters, Shirley Larsen of Elma, Iowa and Sharron McIntyre of Decorah and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews. 

Sandy was preceded in death by her husband, Gary on Sept. 13, 2004; their fur baby, Sparky; her parents; her father and mother-in-law, Vince and Evelyn (Schultz) Bruening; brothers-in-law, Douglas A. McIntyre and Richard Larsen; sister-in-law, Diane Bruening; nephew, Douglas G. McIntyre; and a niece, Melanie Bruening.
