Cadet football team nipped by Vikings, game against Oelwein is cancelled

DECORAH - A second half rally by the Crestwood varsity football team fell short on Friday, Sept. 13 as the Decorah Vikings held on for a 28-21 win over the Cadets.
The loss dropped Crestwood’s overall record to 0-3. Decorah improve to 3-0.
It was reported at noon on Monday, Sept. 16 that the game between Crestwood and Oelwein scheduled for Sept. 20 has been cancelled because of injuries on Oelwein’s team. The Cadets  will win due to forfeit. The ninth grade football game will still be played at Oelwein on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
“This was a great effort by our guys,” Crestwood Head Coach Justin Denner said. “We challenged our guys at halftime (after Decorah took a 28-13 lead at halftime). I didn’t feel like we played Crestwood football in the first half and I thought we were a little timid here and there.
“I told the guys to play Crestwood football and see what happens and we did. We had a great (touchdown) run by Aidan Skoda in the fourth quarter and great execution on the two-point play to cut Decorah’s lead to 28-21.”
With 1:22 left in the fourth quarter, Crestwood moved the ball to the Decorah 41-yard line before the Vikings intercepted a Cadet pass at their own 16-yard line to clinch the win.
