CRESCO - Neither rain, cold, wind or sun could stop the Crestwood girls’ track team on April 18 as the Cadets chalked up 133 points en route to a first place team finish at their home invitational.
Competing at the North Fayette Valley Invite Friday, the Crestwood girls’ team tallied its third straight meet win by racking up 154 points.
Crestwood Invite
The Crestwood girls’ team placed in the top two in 12 events on its way to an impressive first place finish last Tuesday at the Crestwood Invite with 133 points.
Cadet sophomore Katie Saner grabbed gold in the 100 (13.23 seconds), the 200 (27.17) and the 400 (1:00.36). Saner was also second in the long jump at 15 feet, 1 inch. Ellie Friesen won gold in the 1500.
Crestwood captured gold in four relay events including: 4x200 (1:57.08); 4x400 (4:22.52); 4x800 (11:09.76); and the distance medley (4:21.22). Hope Dohlman took second in the 800 (2:37.08) and the 3000 (11:43.78).
“We are continuing to show our toughness and competitiveness as a team,” Cadet Coach Jim Obermann said. “I was also pleased with how our Junior Varsity kids competed. Our overall team depth really helped us.
“Both our individual and relay runners ran very strong, and they had some of their best finishing times of the season. Katie Saner had a tremendous night by winning three events. She is really finding her groove during meets.
“Our distance kids also ran strong, which helped us win the 4x2, 4x4, 4x8 and distance medley. Ellie and Hope continue to lead the way. Brynn Bodermann and Annie Mast also ran well. Kristen Reicks had a personal record in the shot put (35-3.5) and Sharon Goodman had a personal record in the discus (102-0).
“This was a good win, and we had a lot of kids contributing during the meet. All of our kids were sharp. It was good to compete well at our home meet,” Obermann said.

NFV Invite
Facing good competition Friday, April 21 in West Union, the Cadet girls’ team posted 154 points en route to first place at the North Fayette Valley Invitational.
Katie Saner nabbed gold in the 100 (12.72), 200 (26.28), the 400 (1:01.83) and she helped the sprint medley (1:57.74) earn first place. Saner’s time in the 200 set a new school record. The previous mark of 26.5 was set by Faye Perkins in 1974. Ellie Friesen took first in the 800 (2:25.96) and the 3000 (10:38.70).
“One big key for us this year has been our strong depth,” Coach Obermann said. “We took on some really good teams (at the NFV Invite), and we did a good job of scoring points a lot of different ways, including a lot of fourth through eighth place finishes.
“It was great to see all the girls on the team contribute to the win. Our throwers (discus and shot put) did a nice job. Kristen Reicks and Hallie Frohn did a good job in the shot put, and we had two girls (Sharon Goodman and Megan Ryan) throw over 100 feet in the discus.
“Katie Saner won four events, including posting a personal record in the 100 and a school record in the 200. She has made great improvement over the past two weeks. Our distance medley runners also did a nice job. Ellie Friesen, who is getting ready for the Drake Relays, also ran well. It was also great to see our older girls doing a good job of leading the younger kids,” Obermann said.
