Cadet girls' track team wins SW Meet; ready for State Qualifier

CALMAR - Battling good competition, blustery winds and cool temperatures, the Crestwood girls’ track team proved their mettle by placing first in the team standings with 154 points at the South Winn Invitational on Monday, April 29.
The Cadets finished in the top two in 12 events at the meet. Crestwood’s 1600 meter sprint medley team of Emma Godman, Laney Peter, Isabella Schlatter and Kiera Shea won gold in 4:37.70.
Crestwood’s sprint medley team of Ava Johnson, Olivia Johnson, Brooklyn Burke and Mea Shelton took second in 2:06.42. Charley Curtis was second in the 100 dash in 13.25 and Kiera Shea took third in 13.48.
The Cadets’ 4x200 team of Curtis, Olivia Johnson, Burke and Taylor Reis placed second in 1:58.86. Laney Peter won the 800 meters in 2:33.81.
The 4x400 team of Hailee Easley, Burke, Toni Thiele and Sydney van den Heever placed second in 5:13.20. Korey Hrdlicka was second in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 7.25 inches.
“Our depth has been a key factor to the team’s success this season,” Cadet Girls’ Coach Karen Steffen said. “We have multiple athletes who can step in and run our sprint races and relays well, as was shown at the South Winn meet.
“Our young middle and distance runners have been working hard to improve their performance and earn points for the team. We're proud of the strides they have made to become stronger, more confident runners," Steffen said.

The Cadet boys' and girls' track teams will compete at the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet in Denver on Thursday, May 9 at 4 p.m.
