DES MOINES - Taking on the best athletes in Iowa at the Class 2A State Track and Field Meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines from May 22-24, the Crestwood boys’ and girls’ teams both gave an outstanding effort during all three days.
The Cadet boys’ distance medley team of Nathan Mahr, Finnegan Donlan, Brogan Nibbelink and Nathan Ahern placed fourth in a time of 3:33.70 seconds at the Big Blue Oval.
The Crestwood boys’ 4x100 relay team of Finnegan Donlan, Mahr, Dashel Donlan and Aidan took third in the preliminaries in a time of 43.02 to qualify for the finals. In the finals, the Cadets placed fourth in 43.08 second.
Crestwood’s Luke Drtina placed eighth in the high jump at 6 feet, 1 inch.
Cadet senior Nathan Ahern finished sixth in the 800 meters in 1:54.60.
In the girls’ meet, Crestwood’s 4x200 relay team of Charley Curtis, Aubrey Mannery, Isabella Schlatter and Lily Troendle set a new school record in a time of 1:46.86, which gave them 13th place at State.
Korey Hrdlicka nabbed 12th place in the discus event with a distance of 108 feet, 3 inches.
Isabella Schlatter finished 15th in the long jump at 16 feet, 2.25 inches.
Karen Steffen comments
"We wrapped up our track & field season with 10 events competing at the State Meet," Cadet Girls' Coach Karen Steffen said. "The girls had some great performances, but we didn't have any medalists.
"Our top place finisher was Korey in the discus. This was her first time competing in discus at state, and ended up placing 12th. Korey also competed in shot put for her second year in a row, placing 21st.
* Rose made her first trip to State in the shot put. She placed 23rd.
* Isabella made her second trip to state competing in the long jump. She placed 15th.
* This was the first year Ava qualified in the high jump. She made the opening height, but missed at 5' and ended up placing 21st. She had previously competed at state in both the sprint and distance medley relays during her freshman year.
* Competing in all 4 field events kept us busy. It was a great experience for all the girls.
* Laney made her State meet debut in the 3000. She has been to state as an alternate in the DMed, but this was her first time qualifying individually in the 3000. She had a great race, and finished in 21st place.
* Charley ran well in the 100 m dash on Thursday, running close to her season best, and placing 21st.
* Lily ran a PR in the 200 m dash against a very fast field of competitors, and placed 24th.
* Both the 4x100 and 4x200 ran great relays on Friday. Handoffs were pretty clean and fast. The girls rebroke their own school record in the 4x200 - a record they set 2 weeks ago at the NEIC meet in Waukon.
* As coaches, we are blessed to get to work with such outstanding athletes. They make our job very fun and rewarding. We are super proud of their attitude and effort."
Justin Denner comments
"It was an outstanding meet for our athletes, with 4 events placing in the top 8," Cadet Boys' Coach Justin Denner said. "Luke Drtina in the high jump had a great performance to make the top 8, clearing his first two jumps on the first try and nearly breaking his PR at 6’3”. Our Distance Medley team ran an outstanding race to place 4th, setting a PR by almost 2.5 seconds! The 4x100 team ran solid all weekend in a very fast race to place 4th, narrowly missing the podium, and Nathan Ahern ran an outstanding race in his 800 run, setting a new PR/record in the race, placing 6th."
