Crestwood girls lose to Saints, No. 6 WSR; win one at NEIC volleyball tourney

CRESCO - Taking on two solid teams at home last week, the Crestwood varsity volleyball team fought hard before losing to Saint Ansgar last Monday (17-25, 14-25, 21-25) and falling to Class 4A No. 6 Waverly-SR last Tuesday (10-25, 8-25, 14-25).
Competing at the Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament Saturday in Waverly, the Cadets won one match and lost five. Crestwood beat Waukon in three games, 21-17, 15-21, 15-9. The Cadets lost to New Hampton (19-21, 15-21); WSR (11-21, 5-21); Charles City (7-21, 6-21); Oelwein (19-21, 18-21); and Decorah (22-24, 21-19, 12-15). Statistics from the NEIC Tournament were not available.
St. Ansgar match
Facing Saint Ansgar last Monday at home, the Cadets lost to the Saints in three games.
In game one, the Saints took an early 5-2 lead before two kills by Shannon Pisney tied the game at five. Saint Ansgar grabbed an 8-5 lead, but five straight serves by Pisney helped the Cadets take an 11-8 advantage. A kill by Alisha DeWolf gave Crestwood a 13-12 edge before Saint Ansgar went on a 7-2 run to take a 19-15 lead. Two kills by Pisney cut the lead to 20-16 before the Saints clinched the win.
In game two, a kill by Michaela Wiltgen gave the Cadets an early 2-1 lead before the Saints went on a 7-1 run to take a 9-3 lead. Two serves by Katie Chapman helped Crestwood cut the lead to 9-5, but the Saints pulled away late to earn a 25-14 win.
Game three was close throughout. Two kills by Wiltgen and three serves by Pisney helped the Cadets take a 10-6 lead. Saint Ansgar came back to take a 12-11 lead before a kill by DeWolf helped the Cadets go ahead 18-16. Unfortunately for Crestwood, Saint Ansgar rebounded with a 9-3 run to close the game and earn the 25-21 victory.
Crestwood completed 37 of 41 serves, posted 19 kills, had 29 digs and four blocks. Pisney completed seven of eight serves and had seven kills. Elle McConnell was seven of seven serving and had two digs. Mikaela Murphy posted six kills.
Katie Chapman tallied 12 digs and completed seven of nine serves. Baylee Balk had 11 digs and completed five of six serves. Alisha DeWolf had three kills, two blocks and completed seven of seven serves. Kayla Lentz had four digs.
WSR match
Playing against No. 6 Waverly-SR last Tuesday at home, the Cadets were unable to upset the Go-Hawks as W-SR won in three games.
In game one, the Go-Hawks took a 4-1 lead before the Cadets cut the lead to 5-3. However, a 12-2 run by WSR helped the Go-Hawks build a 17-5 lead. Crestwood was unable to close the gap as WSR won 25-10.
In game two, the Cadets trailed 9-6 early before the Go-Hawks went on a 16-2 run down the stretch to win the game 25-8.
Game three was close early. WSR led 3-1 before Crestwood clawed back to tie the game at seven on two serves by Kayla Lentz. The Go-Hawks went on a 10-3 run to go ahead 17-10. Crestwood trailed 22-14 before WSR scored the final three points to win 25-14.
The Cadets completed 32 of 34 serves with one ace, had 18 kills, 32 digs and six blocks.
Baylee Balk and Shannon Pisney each completed six of six serve attempts. Elle McConnell was seven of eight serving with one ace and had one block. Balk tallied 10 digs.
Katie Chapman had 11 digs and completed four of five serves. Kayla Lentz had seven digs and completed four of four serves. Mikaela Murphy had seven kills and one block. Pisney had three kills and two digs. Michaela Wiltgen had two kills and two blocks. Jessica Carolan had two digs.
Crestwood (8-20) will play No. 12 Osage (22-7) in Osage Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. in the first round of the Class 3A regional tournament. The winner will play either New Hampton or Waukon Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in Osage.
