Crestwood spikers nipped by Saints; nab second at NEIC Tournament

CRESCO - In a back-and-forth match, the Crestwood varsity volleyball team battled hard before losing to St. Ansgar in five sets (20-25, 16-25, 25-18, 25-16, 14-16).
“St. Ansgar is a very good team,” Cadet Head Coach Robin Gossman said. “They are ranked in the top five in their class.
“I thought we started off slow with little energy. We kept getting more energized throughout the third set and carried that energy into the fourth and fifth set. Our defense both at the net and on the court was very good. We kept very many strong hits off the floor. This was exactly what I wanted to see from us heading into the tournament schedule,” Gossman said.
Lily Troendle posted 42 assists, three kills, four blocks, nine digs and completed 15 of 17 serves for the Cadets. Olivia Johnson had 10 kills, 11 digs and completed 15 of 16 serves. Aubrey Mannery was 19 of 21 serving, had one ace and 14 digs.
Lily Hubka had 13 kills, 19 digs, completed 10 of 11 serves and had one ace. Zoey Mehmert was five of seven serving, had two ace, three blocks and seven kills. Lydia Williams had 14 kills, four digs and two blocks. Vienna Nibbelink had 31 digs, three assists and completed 12 of 13 serves. Jaylianna Pedretti had three digs.
Cadets second at NEIC
Competing in the final Northeast Iowa Conference volleyball tournament at home on Oct. 19, the Cadets went 3-1 for the day to grab second place overall. The three wins improved Crestwood’s overall record to 24-9, which is a school record for most wins in a season.
New Hampton (4-0) captured first place. Decorah was third, Charles City was fourth and Waukon took fifth.
Crestwood lost a tight match to New Hampton in the first round (19-21, 21-15, 10-15). The Cadets crushed Waukon (21-11, 21-8); downed Charles City (21-14, 21-19); and defeated Decorah in three sets (21-19, 17-21, 15-9).
