WAVERLY - After the Crestwood sub-varsity football team took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, Waverly-Shell Rock answered with 27 straight points to defeat the Cadets, 27-6, Friday in Waverly.
On Crestwood’s first offensive drive, the Cadets drove 58 yards in eight plays. Dawson Rasmusson capped the drive with a three-yard touchdown run with 7:12 left in the first. The two-point conversion failed.
Later in the first, Waverly-SR capitalized on a Cadet fumble to score on a three-yard touchdown run with 4:05 left. The extra point kick gave W-SR a 7-6 lead.
In the second quarter, the Go-Hawks concluded a 51-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown pass with 6:04 left. The extra point kick pushed the lead to 14-6 at halftime.
In the third quarter, W-SR capped a 49-yard drive with a 45-yard touchdown pass. The point after kick extended the lead to 21-6.
In the fourth quarter, W-SR concluded a 62-yard drive with a 41-yard touchdown run to make the score 27-6. The extra point kick was no good.
“We had some mental mistakes that hurt us throughout the game,” Cadet Coach Ryan McCarville said. “We played hard all four quarters. We just had a hard time getting over the hump. Unfortunately, we had a few bad breaks that didn’t go our way. We have to have a better week of practice and finish the season strong against Vinton-Shellsburg (Oct. 23).”
Crestwood gained 168 yards rushing on 41 attempts. Clayton Ollendieck completed six of 16 passes for 42 yards.
