Cresco Community Theatre Productions presents '9 to 5: The Musical'

CRESCO -- Cresco Community Theatre Productions presents '9 to 5: The Musical' Thursday, July 18-Sunday, July 21 at the Cresco Theatre and Opera House.

 Showtime is 7 p.m. Thursday, July 18-Saturday, July 20 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 21. Doors open 30 minutes prior to the start of the production.

 

Tickets are $10 and are currently on sale at Cresco Union Savings Bank, Cresco Bank & Trust, the Cresco Chamber of Commerce Office and the Cresco Theatre and Opera House. Some tickets may be available at the door on show nights. 

 

Director Jayne Jensen said those who attend can expect a lot of laughs

.

"It's a very funny show. If anyone saw the movie '9 to 5', which came up in 1980, it had Dolly Parton, LIly Tomlin and Jane Fonda as the main characters. Our main characters, are Tara Henry, Karen LeFebvre and Katie Ferrie. The show takes place in the late 1970s, so we've been having a lot of fun with the costumes and sets."

 

She continued, "The setting is a large business where the women aren't treated very well and not very fairly. They have a horrible boss. The boss is played by Daniel Allison. Their boss is awful to everyone and they end up taking matters into their own hands. They change things in the office and make it a better place to work and more productive"

 

Jensen said the show might be considered PG-13 for some language and some marijuana smoking scenes, advising parents to consider these factors when deciding whether to bring their children to the show.

 

Meanwhile, Jensen said the small but dedicated cast is having a lot of fun rehearsing.

 

"It's not a huge cast; we have just over 20 people. I've been told everyone is having a good time. With such a small cast, it means everybody is working just as hard as everybody else. The set builders have put a lot of hours into it. We've had a lot of support from different businesses in the community and donations. Ellen Murphy has helped us with the costumes, making us look like we are from the disco-era. Paul Jensen is indispensable of the tech designer, engineer and builder. We have a band: Ann Seebach is playing piano, Paul Jensen playing bass and Sara Hollenbeck is playing drums."

 

In addition to enjoying music and comedy, Jensen said she encourages people to seek refuge from the forecasted heat. 

 

"I understand it's going to be very hot next weekend, and we have lovely air-conditioning. It's going to be an enjoyable show and I think everyone can take something away from it. Get ready to laugh because it's a funny, feel-good show."

 

'9 to 5: The Musical' is a 2008 musical based on the 1980 film of the same name, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton. It features a book by Patricia Resnick, based on the screenplay by Resnick and Colin Higgins.
