Crestwood students showcase talent at Jazz Spotlight

CRESCO - Crestwood Junior High and High School students showcased their musical talent during the Jazz Spotlight last weekend.
The high school gymnasium was transformed into a classy jazz club, complete with tables where audience members enjoyed a full meal and mocktails. During the evening, people took to the dance floor at numerous times.
Director Jason Dobbs opened the evening with performances by the Crestwood High School Jazz Ensemble. They performed “My Dinner With Ronald” by Dean Sorenson and Bruce Pearson; “Inside Out” by Michael Sweeney; “Route 66” by Bobby Troupe and “Into the Sun” by Dean Sorenson and Bruce Pearson.
Students took turns performing solos throughout to applause from the audience.
The second set included “Moanin’” by Bobby Timmons (arranged by Taylor); “If I Could” by Pat Metheny (arranged by Curnow) and “San Juan Night” by Dean Sorenson and Bruce Pearson.
The Crestwood High School Jazz Ensemble includes:
Trumpets: Eric Trautsch, Karissa Cotant and David Meinecke
Trombones: Devin Schott, Nick Braun, Caleb Shea, Zeke Church and Tyrone Grant
Alto Saxophones: Cassie Hosek and Payton Hanni
Tenor Saxophones: Anna Ptacek, Cecelia Smith and Lyanne Wells
Bari-Saxophone: Annie Mast
Drumset: Luke Ishman
Auxiliary Percussion: Katlin Born, Jayden Ruroden (+ bass) and Cameron Larson (+ bass)
Bass: Charlotte Stinson (+ trumpet) and Kaitlyn Loden
Piano: Scarlett Wankerl.
The Crestwood Junior High Jazz Combo performed “Sesame Street” by Roposo, Hart, Stone (arranged by Berry) and “Milo on the Midway” by Dean Sorenson. The latter number featured a solo turn by each of the students in the group. Dobbs stated this was new for the junior high students and encouraged the audience to applaud the entire group at the end of the piece.

Rhythm Section: Ella Keller, piano; Ava Ferrie, drums; and Meredith Moore, bass.
Throughout the evening, groups and individuals took turns performing pieces that had received high ratings at recent solo and ensemble contests. They include: Crestwood High School Brass Choir, “Trumpet Voluntary” by Henry Purcell; Crestwood High School Flute Trio, “Minuetto” by Quantz; Crestwood High School Clarinet Ensemble, “Menuetto” by W.A. Mozart; Crestwood High School Percussion; “Teamwork” by Lynn Glassock and “Gypsy Dance” by James Campbell; Trombone Quartet, “Southland” arranged by Walter Beeler. Soloists were Charlotte Stinson, acoustic guitar; Kaitlyn Loden, marimba; Sharon Goodman, marimba; and Luke Ishman, marimba.
Sound technician was Logan Moore.
Masters of Ceremonies Kayla Hruska and Alison Butikofer introduced a segement “Crestwood’s Got Talent,” where student representatives from each class from the junior high to the high school seniors told the audience their best jokes. The junior high student group won the contest.
The Crestwood High School Symphonic Band concluded the evening with a performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Mercury (arranged by Berry).
