A ground-breaking ceremony was held on Monday, April 2, in preparation of demolition of the 1882 structure of the Howard County jail the following day. Those with golden shovels are Sheriff Mike Miner, Supervisors Don Burnikel and Jan McGovern, Auditor Julie Chapman and Deputy Tim Beckman.
Miner told those gathered, “Thank you for coming. This will be a great asset for Howard County. A new jail has been needed for a long time. I also want to thank the people of Howard County for passing the bond the first time. The jail has done a good job, and has housed a lot of prisoners.”
Construction is anticipated to take approximately one year. Check the Times Plain Dealer newspaper and web page for updated information in the months to come.
