Genevieve was born in Howard County on Feb. 26, 1925, the youngest daughter of William and Mary Ann (Malek) Hyke. The family lived in rural Lourdes, Iowa, where they attended the Lourdes parish church, and Genevieve and her siblings attended the parish school.
