CRESCO - Marlys Hoppie Midthus, age 79, of Cresco, Iowa passed away Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017 at Accura HealthCare of Cresco.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 25, 2017 at Orleans Lutheran Church in rural Cresco. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Marlys was born July 16, 1938 in Cresco to Fred and Luella (Schultz) Hoppie. The family resided on a farm in rural Howard County where she attended country school. After high school, she worked at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. for two years. She returned to Cresco and was employed at Hoines Drug Store for a short period of time.
She married Lawrence C. Gunderson, and to this union four daughters were born. They later divorced, and she married Arlin Midthus on Nov. 23, 2004. After graduation, a group of girlfriends stayed in touch and maintained a monthly coffee group. She continued to attend even after she moved to Hawkeye Care Center.
Marlys worked for Cresco Machine Co. for 37 years as a secretary. She enjoyed doing needlepoint, craftwork and was an excellent seamstress.
She owned Grandma Annie’s Crafts in Cresco for seven years. Her love of fishing took her and her cousin, Larry Denner, to Lake of the Woods in Canada on two fishing trips. She enjoyed fishing with her daughters when they were young as well.
She took many trips to Brainerd, Minn., where she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Marlys loved to cook her Norwegian Fruit Soup (Sot Suppe), which was her specialty. Her dumplings were a favorite among her family.
Marlys is survived by her husband, Arlin of Cresco; four daughters, Tammi (Arlyn) Skoda of Cresco, Vicki (Robbi Howard) Disney of Des Moines, Cindi (Jeff) Kath and Terri (Craig) Cotant, also of Cresco; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, a sister and brother-in-law, Madonna (Donnie) and Frank Storlie, a sister-in-law, LaVonne Donlan and brother-in-law Larry (Deb) Midthus.
She was preceded in death by her parents and first husband, Lawrence C. “Larry” Gunderson.
