Anderlik, Bye win NEIC wrestling titles, Cadets place second

CHARLES CITY - It was a good day for the Class 2A No. 11 Crestwood wrestling team on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament as the Cadets placed second overall with 199.5 points and crowned two individual champs (Kaden Anderlik (120) and Colter Bye (170). Anderlik’s title was his fourth  NEIC crown.
Waverly-SR won the NEIC title with 255 points. New Hampton-Turkey Valley took third with 180 points and Decorah was fourth with 148.
Crestwood tallied three second place finishes including: Carter Fousek (106), Clay Schemmel (138) and Stone Peckham (285). Matthew Slifka (126), Hunter Fousek (132), Hunter Bye (152), Ross Niewoehner (160), Trey Burnikel (195) and Wyatt Scheidel (220) all placed third.
Crestwood Head Coach Keith Slifka was proud of the way all his grapplers competed against stout competition.
“I was very pleased overall with all of our performances,” Slifka said. “Even though some practices (during the week) were postponed because of the weather, the kids are working hard on their own. They are keeping things going in the right direction.
“At 106, Carter Fousek lost a decision to a tough kid (Aiden Riggins of WSR). I’m really happy with the way he is wrestling now, and he is having a great season. Wrestling at 113, Ethan Govern is doing a good job and continuing to get better.
“Kaden Anderlik (120) won his fourth NEIC title, which is impressive. Kaden is also a great team leader. I’m pleased with the way he helps his teammates.
“Matthew Slifka (126) had a nice win the final round to place third. I’m pleased with the way Hunter Fousek (132) competed. He is wrestling strong and confident right now.
“Hunter Bye took third at 152, which was quite a feat. At 160, Ross Niewoehner wrestled well to take third. Ross has the biggest heart, and he knows that it’s go-time right now. He has stepped up as a leader.
“Colter Bye (170) took first and had a really good tourney against some tough kids. I’m happy with the way he is getting early takedowns. Trey Burnikel (195) continues to grow and get stronger.
“We are a solid overall team in Class 2A, and I don’t think anyone wants to wrestle us now (because of our strengths). Our kids know what they need to do to be successful,” Slifka said.
