Border Battle Wrestling Meet scheduled for March 8 at Crestwood

CRESCO - The top senior wrestlers from Northeast Iowa and Southeast Minnesota who have completed outstanding high school careers will face off in the 18th Annual All-Star “Border Battle” dual meet at 7 p.m., Friday, March 8 at the Crestwood High School.
“Things are still up in the air with both the Iowa and Minnesota teams,” stated Dennis Meirick, president of the hosting Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame. “Minnesota just finished their State Tournament this weekend and will be putting their team together in the next few days and snow days  in Iowa have delayed responses from other wrestlers.”
Meirick noted wrestlers from Crestwood, New Hampton, Waukon, South Winneshiek, MFL, Riceville, North Fayette Valley and Wapsie Valley will wrestle for the Iowa squad. Iowa won last year’s Border Battle to take a 9-8 series advantage.
“We’ve got some real quality veteran wrestlers representing the Iowa squad and southeast Minnesota continues to be one of the best overall regions for Minnesota,” Meirick said.
“The Iowa squad has 10 State Qualifiers and nine wrestlers who have won over 100 matches in their  high school career,” Meirick said.
The Iowa squad will be headlined by three bronze medalists from this year’s State Tournament. Kaden Anderlik placed third at 120 pounds for Crestwood this year and broke the school’s win record with 166 wins. Anderlik is a four-time conference champion for the Cadets and three-time State Medalist.
Crestwood’s Colter Bye also placed third at 170 pounds at the State Tournament. He compiled a 131-26 record and was a two-time  USAW All American.
Garret Keehner of MFL Mar-Mac also placed third in the 220 pound class. Keehner was 48-1 this season and 146-33 overall. Like Anderlik and Bye, Keehner was a conference champion.
Other Iowa wrestlers who have already committed include: Hunter Fousek, Crestwood; Gunner Rodgers, North Fayette Valley; Michael Egen, MFL Mar-Mac; Nathan Hyde, Wapsie Valley; Miles Hansmeier, Waukon; Chad Eastman, Riceville; Hunter Miller, MFL Mar-Mac; Cam Rasing, New   Hampton-Turkey Valley; Weston Fantz, North Fayette Valley; Tayton Bullerman, South Winneshiek; Stone Peckham, Crestwood and Rylan Duffy, Wapsie Valley.
“We have to thank the coaches from both Iowa and Minnesota who make this happen every year,” Meirick said. “We really have to scramble to make this happen, but it’s always worth it because we do this to honor our seniors who have given so much to our sport. It’s always exciting.”
Tickets for the event are $6.00 and $5.00 for students and will be sold at the door at Crestwood.
