Cadet girls advance to State Track in 8 events, boys qualify in 2

WAVERLY - Against the backdrop of a perfect spring evening Thursday at the Class 3A State Qualifying Track Meet, the Crestwood girls’ team advanced to State in eight events while the Cadet boys’ squad punched its State ticket in two events.
Crestwood junior Ellie Friesen advanced to State in the 800 (first place, 2:23.90), the 1500 (first, 4:50.82), the 3000 (second, 10:35.93) and the distance medley (second, 4:18.16). Cadet sophomore Katie Saner qualified in the 100 (second, 12.74), the 200 (third, 26.84), the long jump (first, 17-0) and the distance medley. The distance medley also set a new school record. Runners include: Saner, Friesen, Annie Mast and Brynn Bodermann. Cadet freshman Sharon Goodman qualified in the discus with a toss of 118 feet, 1 inch to place third.
In the boys’ meet, Cadet senior Spencer Cuvelier won gold in the discus at 160 feet, 11 inches to punch his ticket to State. Chris Guest took second in the 110 hurdles in 15.86 to advance to State. The Class 3A State Meet will be May 18-20 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Girls’ meet
Crestwood Girls’ Head Coach Jim Obermann was thrilled to see the Cadet girls advance to State in eight events.
“All the girls were excellent tonight,” Obermann said. “I’m really proud of all the girls on the team. Katie Saner and Ellie Friesen had a heavy load with four events, but they competed well. Ellie is very dedicated and mature, and she deserves all her accolades. Katie also stepped up well in her events.
“It was also great to see Sharon Goodman compete well in the discus. She threw the discus nine feet further than her previous best throw. Sharon is one of only two freshmen in Iowa to qualify for State in the discus this year. She has a lot of potential.
“Across the board, our girls performed well. Hope Dohlman didn’t advance to State, but she still ran excellent in the 1500, 4x4 and 4x8. Rachel Steffen, Emily Friesen and Brynn Bodermann also ran well in the 4x8. I was pleased with the way our young sprinters ran, too,” Obermann said.
The coach said the Cadets have the potential to make some noise at State.
“I think we’ll have a good chance to score a lot of points at State,” Obermann said. “I am very proud that we finished fourth as a team at the State Qualifier. I’m looking for a lot of excitement from us at State.”

Boys’ meet
Crestwood Boys’ Head Coach Chris Lentz was excited to see several Cadets compete well at the State Qualifier Thursday in Waverly.
“As a team, all of our guys performed well,” Lentz noted. “Several guys had personal records. A lot of guys peaked at the meet and really got after it. I think a lot of our athletes saw the light at the end of the tunnel, and now they need to carry that into other sports.
“Spencer Cuvelier threw the discus well, even though the wind made it a little tough for the event. He did what he needed to do to advance to State. His goal at State is to throw at least 180 feet.
“Chris Guest had a personal record in the 110 hurdles, and he is steadily improving in every meet. He ran a good, clean race, and he got under 16 seconds (15.86) for the first time all year. We’re hoping he can get another PR at State,” Lentz said.
