Cadet girls sweep Decorah, NH; place fourth at home tourney

CRESCO - The Crestwood softball team proved its mettle on the road last week as it swept doubleheaders against Decorah on May 30 (5-0 and 7-1) and New Hampton on June 1 (5-3 and 4-3).

Hosting its home tourney Saturday, the Cadet softball team bounced Turkey Valley, 10-0, in game one; lost to Mason City New man, 9-12, in game two; and was defeated by New Hampton, 9-13, in the third place game.

The Cadets (8-3) will host Waverly-SR on June 8 and play at Turkey Valley on June 9.

 

Cadets 5, Decorah 0 (G1)

In game one of the twinbill with the Vikes on May 30, Cadet pitcher Laken Lienhard chalked up the win as she tossed seven strong innings, allowed only three hits and struck out three during the 5-0 victory.

“I was very pleased with our defense, which had no errors,” Cadet Coach Doug Sickles said. “Both games against Decorah were two of the best games we’ve played in a long time. Kelsey Burnikel had a great defensive game. I like the effort all the kids in the field are showing. This was an extremely well-played game.”

At the plate, Laken Lienhard posted two hits, including one double and one home run, and had one run batted in. Lauren Reicks had two hits, including one double, and two RBI.

Megan Ryan had one double, one single and one RBI. Kaylee Thomas had one hit and one RBI. Kristen Reicks had one hit.

Cadets 7, Decorah 1 (G2)

In the second game, Lauren Reicks tallied the win as she tossed seven solid innings, allowed four hits, one earned run and struck out four.

“Lauren did an outstanding job pitching,” Sickles said. “Defensively, we made some outstanding plays, too.”

Laken Lienhard recorded four hits at the plate, including one home run, and had three RBI. Lauren Reicks had three hits, including two doubles, and one RBI. Kaylie Henry had two singles.

Kayla Lentz had one single. Megan Ryan tallied one double. Kristen Reicks had one RBI.

Cadets 5, N.H. 3

In game one against New Hampton on June 1, the Cadets broke a three-all tie in the fifth when Megan Ryan singled to drive in two runs to give Crestwood a 5-3 win.

“In both games against New Hampton, we weren’t as sharp on defense as we have been in other games, but our kids did a good job of grinding out a win,” Sickles said.

Laken Lienhard earned the win. She pitched seven innings, allowed seven hits, two earned runs and struck out four.

Lienhard had two singles and two RBI at the plate. Kelsey Burnikel and Kaylee Thomas each had one hit. Shannon Pisney had two hits, including one home run, and one RBI. Megan Ryan had one hit and two RBI.

Cadets 4, N.H. 3

In game two, the Cadets built a 4-0 lead and held off a late New Hampton rally to earn a 4-3 victory.

Lauren Reicks was the winning pitcher. She went seven innings, allowed nine hits, two earned runs and struck out one.

Lienhard tallied two hits, including a home run to lead off the game. Shannon Pisney had three singles and one RBI. Lauren Reicks had one hit. 

Megan Ryan had one hit and one RBI. Kaylee Thomas ripped a solo home run. Kaylie Henry had one double.

“I like how our girls are competing, but we still need more hits up and down the lineup,” Sickles noted.

Crestwood Tourney

Cadets 10, TV 0

In game one Saturday, Cadet senior Lauren Reicks tossed a no-hitter over six innings to help Crestwood chalk up a 10-0 win over Turkey Valley.

Crestwood recorded 14 total hits against the Trojans. Lienhard had two hits, including one double, two runs and two RBI. Burnikel had one hit, one run and one RBI. Pisney had one hit and one RBI. 

Lauren Reicks had one double and one run. Megan Ryan had two hits, including one double, one run and one RBI. Kaylee Thomas had two hits, one run and one RBI. Kristen Reicks had one double, one run and one RBI.

Karley Freidhof had two hits, two runs and one RBI. Kaylie Henry had two hits, one run and one RBI. 

Lauren Reicks was the winning pitcher. She went six innings, allowed no hits, no runs, three walks and struck out five.

M.C. Newman 12, Cadets 9

In game two, Crestwood held a 7-5 lead in the third before Mason City Newman rallied for three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth en route to a 12-9 win over the Cadets.

Pisney tallied three hits, including two doubles, and had two RBI. Kayla Lentz had two doubles and two RBI. Lienhard tallied two doubles, two runs and one RBI.

Lauren Reicks had one double, one run and one RBI. Kaylee Thomas had four hits and one RBI. Megan Ryan had two hits, including one double, and one RBI. Kristen Reicks and Burnikel each had one hit. Kaylie Henry had two hits, including one double, and two runs.

In the third place game, the Cadets took an early 2-0 lead before New Hampton stormed back with five runs in the third and six in the fifth to earn a 13-9 win.

Pisney led Crestwood at the plate with four hits, including one double and two home runs, and had four RBI. Lienhard had three hits, including two doubles and one home run, and had two RBI. Ryan had two hits, including one double, and one RBI.

Kaylee Thomas had three hits, one run and one RBI. Freidhof had one hit and one run. Kaylie Henry had two hits and one RBI.

Lauren Reicks was the losing pitcher. She went four innings, allowed four hits, six runs (three earned), one walk and struck out two. Hallie Frohn tossed three innings, allowed seven runs (two earned) and struck out one.
