Cadet grapplers pin NB, N-P, Newman; place eighth at Independence

MASON CITY - The Crestwood varsity wrestling team opened its season on Nov. 30 in Mason City with three dual wins. The Cadets posted a 46-27 dual win over North Butler, beat Nashua-Plainfield 38-36 and crushed Mason City Newman, 66-9.

“In our first dual, we beat Mason City Newman, 66-9, and I was pretty proud of that dual,” Cadet Coach Keith Slifka said. “The Nashua dual was closer than we thought it might be. In the North Butler dual, we stepped up and showed our experience. Overall, I was fairly happy with how we wrestled in all three duals.”

Independence Tourney

Competing at the Cliff Keen Independence Tournament Friday and Saturday against many strong teams, the Cadets wrestled well as they placed eighth overall with 213 points.

Cadet junior Kaden Anderlik won five of six matches at 120 pounds to place third. Colter Bye went 6-1 at 160 to take third. Jared Knutson went 5-2 at 285 to place fourth. Chris Guest took sixth place at 152, and Ryan Steffen was seventh at 145.

“This tournament is one of the toughest in all of Iowa,” Slifka said. “To finish eighth overall shows me that we are where we want to be at this point of the year, but we still need to get better.

“Kaden Anderlik wrestled really strong, and he can wrestle with the elite wrestlers. Colter Bye wrestled very well. I am extremely happy with Colter’s improvement. Ryan Steffen (at 145) had one of the toughest weight classes. Ross Niewoehner lost only two matches and finished 10th.

“Everyone in our lineup contributed during the tournament. We’re still missing some kids in the lineup (because of injuries), and we’re filling holes with some inexperienced guys,” the coach said.
