Crestwood crowns three champions, grabs first at Flanagan Invitational

CRESCO - Saturday was a solid day for the Crestwood wrestling team as the Cadets crowned three champions and took first place at the Flanagan Invitational at home. Carter Fousek (113), Hunter Bye (160) and Trey Burnikel (220) all won individual titles. Nathaniel Bigalk (106), Matthew Slifka (126), Landen Schemmel (170) and Wyatt Scheidel (195) all placed second.
The Cadets tallied 202.5 total points to edge runner-up Denver, who placed second with 201 points.
Crestwood Head Coach Keith Slifka was pleased to see his team perform well against stout competition at the Flanagan Invitational.
“We advanced seven wrestlers to the finals, which is half of the weights,” Slifka said. “Even though we would have liked to have seen more than three champions, it was still a good day for our guys.
“Nathaniel Bigalk (106) took second after losing to Jakob Regan of Waukon, who he defeated on Jan. 9. Nathaniel will have a chance to face him again at the conference meet (on Feb. 1). Ryan Wilson (106) and Cade Korsmo (106) both got a chance to wrestle at the tourney.
“At 113, Carter Fousek dominated in his matches with two falls and a tech fall win. He is wrestling very well. At 120, Cole Butikofer won two decisions to take fourth.
“Wrestling at 126, Matthew Slifka lost to a tough kid (Jacob Moore of Denver) in the finals but he still competed hard to get second place. Bryce Shea jumped to 132 pounds and did a nice job to place fourth.
“At 160, Hunter Bye stayed with his game plan and he wrestled with discipline to earn first. At 170, Landen Schemmel took second after getting out-gunned against Dylan Dunan of NFV in the finals.
“At 195, Wyatt Scheidel lost to a really tough kid (Dawson Palmer of Decorah) in the finals to place second but Wyatt will see him (Palmer) again in the sectionals. At 220, Trey Burnikel wrestled well to earn first. Overall, this was a good tourney because our guys wrestled well and a lot of guys got some mat time,” Slifka said.
