Crestwood girls edge Comets, rip Vikings, win two at WD Tourney

 

CRESCO - It was a good week for the Crestwood softball team last week as the Cadets chalked up wins over Charles City (3-2) on June 14 on the road and Decorah (7-0) on June 15 at home.
Playing at the West Delaware Tourney Friday and Saturday, the Cadets won two games and lost two games. Crestwood lost to Starmont (2-7), beat East Buchanan (1-0), downed Maquoketa Valley (3-2), and the Cadets lost to Williamsburg (3-4).
Crestwood’s record is 15-6 overall and 9-1 and first place in the NEIC.
 
Cadets 3, C.C 2 (9 in)
The Cadets tallied one run in the top of the ninth on a Charles City error as the Cadets beat the Comets, 3-2, on June 14 in Charles City.
Charles City led 2-0 in the second inning before Crestwood plated single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the score. Kelsey Burnikel ripped a double in the sixth to tie the game at two.
“This game was an old-fashioned classic softball game,” Cadet Coach Doug Sickles said. “Both Laken Lienhard and Charles City’s pitcher threw outstanding games. Our defense really stepped up. I was proud to see our team find ways to keep the score close and prevail at the end.”
Shannon Pisney and Lauren Reicks each had one hit and one run. Kelsey Burnikel tallied one double and one run batted in. Laken Lienhard had one hit and one run.
Lienhard was the winning pitcher. She tossed nine innings, allowed five hits, two runs (no earned runs), walked one and struck out one.

Cadets 7, Decorah 0
Strong pitching, hitting and fielding helped the Cadets rout the Decorah Vikings, 7-0, Thursday at home to improve to 9-1 in the NEIC, which is good for first place.
Crestwood chalked up two runs in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Kaylie Henry ripped a single to drive in Megan Ryan and Kaylee Thomas.
The Cadets added two runs in the fourth to push the lead to 4-0. Laken Lienhard crushed a solo home run to right field, and Megan Ryan singled to drive in Shannon Pisney.
Crestwood posted three more runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 7-0. Kayla Lentz ripped a double to drive in courtesy runner Annie Mast. Lentz scored on a wild pitch. Courtesy runner Keelee Andera scored on a Viking error.
“Laken pitched very well,” Sickles noted. “We also did a good job at the plate of putting pressure on Decorah. We hit the ball well up and down the lineup.”
Laken Lienhard earned the win. She pitched seven innings, allowed four hits, no runs, no walks and she struck out eight.
At the plate, Kaylie Henry had one single and two runs batted in. Lienhard tallied three hits, including one home run, had two runs and two RBI. Lauren Reicks had two singles.
Megan Ryan ripped three hits, including one double, and had one RBI. Kaylie Thomas had one hit and one run. Shannon Pisney had one single and one run scored. Kayla Lentz had one double, one run and one RBI. Keelee Andera and Emma Rissman each scored one run.

West Delaware Tourney
Starmont 7, Cadets 2
The Starmont Stars scored two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to defeat the Cadets, 7-2, Friday at West Delaware.
Coach Sickles noted the Cadets struggled on offense in all four games they played at the tournament.
“In all four games, Laken and Lauren pitched well enough for us to win,” Sickles said. “We just didn’t hit the ball hard. It was tough to get our timing right when we were at the plate. We faced some really good competition throughout the tournament. Hopefully, facing teams like these will pay off for us down the road.”
Starmont led 3-0 after three innings before the Cadets scored single runs in the fourth and sixth to cut the lead to 3-2.

Kristen Reicks had one hit and one RBI. Kayla Lentz had one hit.
Lauren Reicks was the losing pitcher. She went seven innings, allowed seven hits, seven runs (three earned) and struck out eight.

Playing East Buchanan Friday at West Delaware, the Cadets tallied one run in the third and made it stick during a 1-0 win.
Laken Lienhard earned the win in the pitcher’s circle. She tossed seven innings, allowed only three hits and walked nine.
At the plate, Lienhard had one double and one run scored. Kelsey Burnikel had one hit. Shannon Pisney had one RBI. Kristen Reicks and Kayla Lentz each had one single.

The Cadets scored three runs in the first inning and held on to edge Maquoketa Valley, 3-2, Saturday at West Delaware.

Williamsburg 4, Cadets 3
Williamsburg broke a three-all tie with one run in the eighth inning to nip the Cadets, 4-3.
Crestwood held a 3-0 lead in the second before Williamsburg tallied three runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game.
Lienhard tallied two hits, including one double, and scored one run. Pisney and Kristen Reicks each had one hit and one RBI. Thomas had one run.
Ryan had one hit and one run. Kayla Lentz had one hit and two RBI. Kaylie Henry had one hit.
Lauren Reicks was the losing pitcher. She went eight innings, allowed seven hits, four runs (three earned) and struck out five.
