Fousek wins title, Cadet grapplers place third at NEIC Tournament

CRESCO - Hosting the Northeast Iowa Conference Wrestling Tournament on Feb. 1, the Crestwood wrestling squad placed third overall with 190 points and crowned one individual champion, Class 2A No. 1 Carter Fousek (113 pounds). Waverly-SR won the team title with 264 points and Charles City took second with 197 points.

The Cadets had six grapplers place second individually. They included: Nathaniel Bigalk (106); Cole Butikofer (120); Matthew Slifka (126); Chase Thomas (132); Clay Schemmel (138); and Trey Burnikel (220). Wyatt Scheidel (285) and Landon Schemmel (170) both placed third.

“I was very pleased overall with the way all our guys competed at the conference tournament,” Cadet Head Coach Keith Slifka said. “To get seven guys into the finals and have one champion was great. Carter Fousek wrestled well to earn a title. We are right where we need to be as a team heading into the final sprint of the season. We can still work on some little things but I feel good going into sectionals.”

The Class 2A Sectional Tournament will be at noon on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Decorah High School. The Class 2A District Tournament will be at noon on Saturday, Feb. 15 at New Hampton High School. The State Wrestling Tournament will be held from Feb. 20-22 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
