Friesen, Saner win four golds; Cuvelier sets new mark in discus at NEIC meet

WAVERLY - Crestwood junior Ellie Friesen and sophomore Katie Saner both captured four golds while senior Spencer Cuvelier nabbed gold and a school record in the discus event Thursday, May 4 at the Northeast Iowa Conference Track Meet.
The Crestwood girls’ team earned a tie for second place with Charles City with 91 points. The Cadet boys’ team placed sixth overall with 46 points. Decorah won the boys’ and girls’ team title at the meet.
Girls’ meet
Cadets Ellie Friesen and Katie Saner both gave stellar performances at the NEIC meet each one placed first in four events to lift Crestwood to a tie for second place overall, which is the highest the Cadets have ever finished at the NEIC meet.
Saner won gold in the 100 dash (12.60 seconds), the 200 (26.24), the long jump (17 feet, 3.25 inches) and the distance medley relay (4:23.25). Friesen grabbed gold in the 800 (2:22.82), the 1500 (4:57.57), the 3000 (10:52.43) and the distance medley relay.
Sharon Goodman finished third in the discus with a toss of 109 feet, 4.5 inches, and she took third in the high jump at 4 feet, 8 inches.
Cadet Girls’ Coach Jim Obermann said he was thrilled with the way all the girls competed at the NEIC meet.
“Both Ellie and Katie gave outstanding performances with each girl being a four-time champion,” Obermann said. “Ellie was coming off a tough weekend at the Drake Relays (April 27-29), and she did a great job bouncing back. Katie also rose to the occasion in her events, which included jumping over 17 feet in the long jump for the first time. Both girls also ran well in the distance medley for us.
“Sharon Goodman also had an outstanding night by placing third in the discus and the high jump. Hope Dohlman had a good night by taking fifth in the 1500. All of our kids did a good job of competing hard.
“Placing second overall feels good because this is the highest we’ve placed at the conference meet. We have a lot of good athletes on our team, and we were excited to see them compete well,” the coach said.
The Cadet boys’ and girls’ teams will both compete at the Class 3A State Qualifier Meet May 11 at 4 p.m. at Waverly.
