No. 1 Crestwood girl cagers rout WSR, Caledonia; clinch NEIC title

CRESCO - After falling behind by three points in the first quarter, the No. 1 Crestwood varsity girls’ basketball team went on a 26-6 second quarter run and never looked back on its way to a 74-37 thrashing of Waverly-Shell Rock Friday.
The win clinched the Northeast Iowa Conference title for the Cadets for the second straight year and fifth overall (2000, 2003, 2008, 2017, 2018).
Playing at Caledonia on Saturday, the Cadets grabbed a 40-23 halftime lead and sailed to a 67-46 win.
The Cadets (19-0 overall, 10-0 NEIC) will host Oelwein on Feb. 8 for Senior Night. On Feb. 10 at 7 p.m., Crestwood will host Oelwein in the first round of the Class 3A Region 4 Tournament. The winner will play either Waukon or North Fayette Valley on Feb. 14 at Crestwood. The region final is scheduled for Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. at Oelwein.
Cadets 74, W-SR 37
Waverly-SR took a 15-12 lead after one period before the Cadets bounced back to grab a 38-21 halftime led en route to a convincing 74-37 victory.
Crestwood Head Coach Doug Sickles said the Go-Hawks played tough against the Cadets.
“During the first half, Waverly-Shell Rock’s offense gave us some problems,” Sickles noted. “It took us a few minutes to adjust to what Waverly was doing. Once we made those adjustments, good things happened for us.
“I give credit to Waverly because in the first quarter, they hit a lot of shots. Our defense wasn’t bad, but we gave Waverly some uncontested shots. In basketball, those are the easiest shots to make. After we started contesting their shots more, we had some good things happen.
“We’re glad to win the conference again, and we’re proud of that accomplishment, but these girls have bigger goals (such as getting back to State). We know we still have some big games ahead of us,” Sickles said.
Shannon Pisney led the Cadets with 26 points, including four three-pointers, and had eight rebounds. Sharon Goodman had 24 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Ellie Friesen posted 12 points, including three three-pointers, had 11 assists, four rebounds and two blocks.
Brynn Bodermann had six points, including one three-pointer, three assists and two rebounds. Emily Friesen had two points, seven rebounds and three assists. Laken Lienhard and Brooklyn Ferrie each had two points.
