No. 10 Cadet wrestling team pins Oelwein, Independence; takes second at WSR Tourney

OELWEIN - The Class 2A No. 10 Crestwood wrestling team closed out the regular dual season on a strong note by defeating Independence (45-31) and Oelwein (54-12) on Jan. 17.

“We wrestled well in both meets,” Cadet Head Coach Keith Slifka said. “Oelwein and Independence both have strong teams. I was really pleased with how our guys competed against both teams. Both Kaden Anderlik, Matthew Slifka and Carter Fousek all had nice pins against Independence. Cale Jackson had a major decision against Oelwein.”

Three Cadets are ranked in the top 10 including: No. 3 Carter Fousek (106), No. 4 Kaden Anderlik (120) and No. 4 Colter Bye (170).

The Cadets finished second in the NEIC with a 5-1 mark and 14-5 overall in duals. The Crestwood varsity squad will compete at the NEIC Tournament in Charles City at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26. Crestwood will host the Junior Varsity NEIC Tournament at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 28.

WAVERLY - Battling at the Rick Caldwell Invite in Waverly on Jan. 19, the Cadets wrestled extremely well as they placed second overall. Kaden Anderlik (120) and Colter Bye (170) both finished first. 

Anderlik tallied three falls to earn his 150th career win, which moves him into fourth place all-time in school history. Brandon Mayer is first with 157 wins, Trae Pecinovsky is second (154) and Ryan Steffen is in third place (152).

Nathaniel Bigalk (106), Ross Niewoehner (160), Hunter Bye (152) and Wyatt Scheidel (220) all placed second.

“Kaden wrestled very well, and everything is clicking for him,” Slifka said. “We had 12 guys finish in the top three. The invitational didn’t have as many teams as originally planned because a few teams didn’t come because of the weather.”
