No. 9 Cadet girls hold off Waukon

WAUKON - The Class 3A No. 9 Crestwood varsity girls’ basketball team held off a second half rally by Waukon to nip the Indians, 56-53, on Jan. 26 on the road.

The win improved the Cadets’ overall record to 11-4 and 8-1 in the Northeast Iowa Conference. Waverly-Shell Rock is 7-1 in the NEIC and Waukon is 6-2.

The Class 3A Region 3 pairings were recently released. Crestwood will play Union at home at 7 p.m. on Feb. 9. The winner will play either New Hampton or Waterloo Columbus at 7 p.m. on Feb. 13 at Crestwood. The region final will be at 7 p.m. on Feb. 16 at Charles City. Teams on the other side of the bracket include: Osage, Hampton-Dumont, Forest City, and G-H-V.

Facing Waukon, Crestwood led 17-11 after one period, took a 29-23 halftime edge and held a 45-37 advantage going into the fourth.

“We had a 10-point lead with five minutes left in the game before Waukon hit a couple shots and tied the game,” Cadet Head Coach Dale Dennler said. “Waukon fouled us late, and we made some clutch free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

“Overall, I thought we played well. This was a great game to get us ready for the Class 3A Tournament (starting on Feb. 9), and it was a big win for us. The girls worked hard and gave a gritty performance. Our confidence as a team has improved since the Christmas break,” Dennler said.

Cadet statistics

Sharon Goodman posted a double-double with 30 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Shelby Pisney had eight points, including two three-pointers, six assists and two rebounds. Taylor Shelton had seven points, including one three-pointer, and had three assists.

Annie Mast had five points, including one three-pointer, and three rebounds. Laken Lienhard tallied four points, five rebounds and four assists. Brooklyn Ferrie had three assists and three rebounds. Kennedy Gaul had two rebounds.
