Three Crestwood boy grapplers place fifth at State Tournament

DES MOINES - Crestwood wrestlers Mitchell Schmauss (113), Carter Schmauss (120) and Brock Voyna (175) all captured fifth place in their respective weight classes at the 2024 Boys’ State Wrestling Tournament held from Feb. 14-17 at Wells Fargo Arena.
Owen Korsmo (106) and Tyler Pisney (165) both wrestled hard for the Cadets but lost their first two matches and didn’t finish in the top eight.
As a team, the Cadets finished 22nd overall with 41 points. Osage won the Class 2A Team Title with 128.5 points and Mt. Vernon was second at 110.
Mitchell Schmauss (113) won his first two matches to advance to the quarterfinals against Carter West of Burlington Notre Dame. West and Schmauss were tied at 2-all after three periods before West won a 7-2 overtime decision. Schmauss battled back in the consolation round to take fifth after winning a 2-0 decision over Jayson Stevens of Hampton-Dumont-CAL. West placed third at 113.
Wrestling at 120, Carter Schmauss won by fall and won a decision in the first two matches to advance to the semifinals against Ryan Bahnson of West Lyon. In the semis, Bahnson scored a two-point takedown in the second period and held on to win a 2-1 decision over Schmauss. Bahnson finished second after losing to Gage Spurgeon of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Freemont in the finals. Schmauss lost a 5-4 decision to Christian Aherns of Creston in the consolation semifinals before winning a 4-3 decision over Brayden Maury of West Delaware to finish fifth.
Competing at 175, Voyna tallied a pin and a decision in his first two matches before losing a 5-3 decision to Daniel Gorskikh of Knoxville in round three. Voyna won three of his next four matches to finish fifth. In the fifth place match, Voyna posted a 5-0 decision over Kenny Kerr of North Fayette Valley.
