Turkey Valley volleyball team spikes WC, Rockford; grabs first at UIC Tournament

JACKSON JUNCTION - The Class 1A No. 14 Turkey Valley volleyball team turned in a strong performance during its final regular season home match as the Trojans crushed West Central in three games, 25-11, 25-6, 25-17.

Playing at Rockford Thursday, the Trojans won two of three games to win the match, 25-19, 19-25, 15-10.

Competing at the Upper Iowa Conference meet Saturday in Postville, the Trojans notched five wins to grab first place. TV crushed West Central (21-14, 21-1); bounced Ed-Co twice (21-11, 21-12 and 21-14, 21-9); beat MFL-Mar-Mac (21-12); and downed Clayton Ridge (21-13, 21-13). The five wins improved TV’s overall record to 25-6.

 

West Central match

“Tonight (against West Central) was our last conference game and also our Senior Night,” TV Coach Tammy Vrzak said. “It was a great night for a win!”

The Trojans completed 70 of 73 serves with 11 aces, had 38 kills, 35 assists, 35 digs and six blocks.

Kennedy Balk completed 16 of 16 serves with three aces and had 12 digs. Kayla Schaufenbuel was 21 of 21 serving with three aces, had four blocks, three digs and 10 kills. Macie Njus was 10 of 10 serving with three aces.

Stephanie Martin posted 10 kills and completed six of seven serves with two aces. Delaney Lensing had 17 assists, nine digs, five kills and completed eight of nine serves. Morgen Kuennen had five kills. Taylor Kuennen and Brooke Herold each had four kills. Sarah Busta was nine of 10 serving and had seven assists.

 

Rockford match

TV Coach Tammy Vrzak praised her team for playing well against Rockford.

“Well, we played our last game of the season, now we go to our conference tournament on Saturday.  We played Valley Lutheran, Rockford and Belmond Klemme.  Our serving was on fire as we aced quite a few times! It was a great way to finish up our regular season,” Vrzak said.

The Trojans completed 55 of 58 serves with four aces, had 39 kills, 36 assists and 42 digs.

Kayla Schaufenbuel completed 16 of 17 serves, had 14 kills and four digs. Sarah Busta was 11 of 12 serving with one ace, had eight assists and four digs. Stephanie Martin posted 14 kills and 10 digs.

Macie Njus had 11 digs and completed eight of eight serves with one ace. Delaney Lensing had 26 assists, four digs and completed six of seven serves with one ace. Taylor Kuennen had three kills. Morgen Kuennen had four kills and one block. Kennedy Balk had five digs.

UIC Tournament

Turkey Valley Head Coach Tammy Vrzak was thrilled to see the Trojans win the tourney.

“We had a fantastic weekend!” Vrzak said. “ We were on fire as we went to play the Upper Iowa Conference. Everyone stepped up and played to their best ablility!  I told the girls when I got on the bus that morning. ‘It's tournament time and I have a good feeling we are bringing home a conference championship!’  The whole day went our way as we lived up to that feeling.”

 

W. Central match

Facing the Blue Devils, the Trojans won, 21-14, 21-1. TV completed 39 of 41 serves with 13 aces, had 24 kills, 23 assists and 13 digs.

Serving: Macie Njus 18-18, Delaney Lensing 11-12. Aces: Njus 8, Lensing 3. Kills: Kayla Schaufenbuel 11, Stephanie Martin 8. Assists: Lensing 18. Digs: Martin 5, Njus 3.

 

E-C match

The Trojans beat E-C, 21-11, 21-12, in the first match. TV completed 40 of 41 serves with four aces, had 30 kills and 29 assists.

Serving: Njus 12-13. Kills: Schaufenbuel 13, Martin 10. Assists: Lensing 24. Digs: Lensing 7, Martin 5, Njus 5, Kennedy Balk 5.

 

MFL match

Playing against MFL, the Trojans won, 21-7, 21-12. TV was 37 of 41 serving with 10 aces, had 25 kills and 24 assists.

Serving: Schaufenbuel 15-16. Aces: Schaufenbuel 6, Sarah Busta 3. Kills: Schaufenbuel 11, Martin 8. Assists: Lensing 16, Busta 3. Blocks: Morgen Kuennen 2.

 

E-C second match

TV beat Ed-Co in the second match, 21-14, 21-9. The Trojans completed 38 of 41 serves, had 23 kills, 18 digs and 21 assists.

Serving: Kennedy Balk 8-10. Kills: Schaufenbuel 9, Taylor Kuennen 5. Assists: Lensing 10, Busta 5.  Digs: Schaufenbuel 4.
